Two psychiatrists join staff of DeLano Clinic

Two psychiatrists, Niaz Mohammad, MD, and Ranjeeb Shrestha, MD, have joined DeLano Outpatient Clinic and the Borgess Medical Center Medical Staff.

Dr. Shrestha received his medical education at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal.  He served his residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY, and a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Shrestha has a special interest in pervasive developmental disorders, childhood anxiety disorders, childhood mood and psychotic disorders, and complex ADHD cases.  He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Mohammad, a geriatric and general psychiatrist who has a special interest in psychopharmacology for geriatric patients, received his medical degree from Dow Medical College in Pakistan. In Pakistan, he also completed residences in Internal Medicine, Emergency/Critical Care and Neurosurgery. Most recently, he completed a residency in Psychiatry from Michigan State University/Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies (MSU/KCMS) and a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry through Indiana University.  Fluent in English, Urdu and Punjabi, Dr. Mohammad is a member of the American Psychiatric Association.

General and vascular surgeon joins Borgess Medical Staff

Anton Sharapov, MD, a general and vascular surgeon, has joined the Medical Staff of Borgess Medical Center.  

Dr. Sharapov is affiliated with The Surgical Group of Southwest Michigan.  He has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, trauma surgery and arterial aneurysm repair.

Dr. Sharapov received his medical education at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, Canada.  He also served his residency at Memorial University.

In 2005-2006, Dr. Sharapov was Chief Resident at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and Health Science Center, St. Johns.  He then served a Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Fellowship at Ottawa University, Ontario, Canada.  Most recently, Dr. Sharapov was Trauma Team Leader at Civic Hospital in Ottawa. 

Dr. Sharapov is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Board of Surgery, American Board of Vascular Surgery and the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Family practice specialist joins Borgess Family Medicine in Plainwell

Darcie Sharapova, MD, ABFM, CCFP, has joined Borgess Family Medicine at  Borgess-Pipp Medical Commons, 345 Naomi Street in Plainwell.

A previous record holder and three-time Olympic gold medalist, Dr. Sharapova is a former skater with the U.S. International Speedskating Team.

Dr. Sharapova received her medical degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland Canada Medical School, where she also completed her Family Practice residency. Prior to joining Borgess Family Medicine, she served in Family Practice at Eau Claire Medical Center, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Borgess Lee Medical Group Announces Provider Transitions

Joe Mashni, family nurse practitioner (FNP), will transition to seeing patients at Borgess Lee Medical Group’s Adult and Pediatric Walk-In Clinics located within the Donald Lyons Health Center (520 Main Street, Suite A) in Dowagiac. Two experienced caregivers, Sangeeta Pal, MD, and Judy Mitchelson, PA-C, will take over Mashni’s current responsibilities at the Internal Medicine and Family Practice office in Cassopolis.

Dr. Pal graduated from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in India and completed her residency training in internal medicine through Roger Williams Medical Center/Boston University. A member of the American College of Physicians and American Medical Association, Dr. Pal has been serving patients in the Donald Lyons Health Center for more than two years.

Judy Mitchelson received a Bachelor of Medicine from Western Michigan University’s Physician Assistant Program. Since 2008, she has served as one of the Adult Walk-In Clinic providers in the Donald Lyons Health Center. A fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Mitchelson formerly worked as a primary care provider at Buchanan Family Medical Center in Buchanan, Mich.

Joe Mashni graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing from Michigan State University and passed the certification exam for Family Nurse Practitioner in 1999.  Prior to that, Mashni worked in several areas of Borgess Medical Center, including the emergency room, intensive care unit (ICU), post-anesthesia recovery and as a house supervisor.

Mashni will begin delivering care in the Adult and Pediatric Walk-In Clinics on Monday, May 10. Critical Care Specialist joins Borgess Medical Staff

Anita Charochak, DO, has joined Borgess Critical Care Services and the Borgess Medical Center Medical Staff.

Dr. Charochak received her medical education at University of Health Science, Kansas City, MO, and served her residency at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, Pontiac, Michigan.  She also served a Fellowship at Detroit Medical Center, Detroit, Michigan.

Dr. Charochak has previously been affiliated with Michigan Health Center, Detroit, Sinai Grace Hospital, Detroit, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital-Clinton, Clinton Township, Michigan, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital-Warren, Warren, Michigan, and St. John Providence Hospital, Southfield, Michigan.

She has three board certifications, in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Critical Care, all from the American Osteopathic Association.

Radiologist joins Borgess Medical Staff

Laurene Mann, MD, has joined Premier Radiology and the Medical Staff of Borgess Medical Center.

Dr. Mann received her medical education at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.  She served her residency at Michigan State University, East Lansing.

Dr. Mann also served a Fellowship in Breast Imaging at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Miami, Florida.

Prior to coming to Kalamazoo, Dr. Mann was affiliated with The Breast Health Center in Miami, Metrolina Women’s Breast Center, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Centra Health Breast Services, Lynchburg, Virginia.

Dr. Mann is board certified in Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Soundos Moualla named Medical Director for Borgess Women’s Heart Program

Soundos Moualla, MD, of the Heart Center for excellence, has been named Medical Director for the Borgess Women’s Heart Program. 

Dr. Moualla has long had a special interest in heart care for women, one that started during her training. 

Dr. Moualla completed a residency and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and a Cardiology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.

At both the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, she performed her electives in the women’s cardiology program.

Dr. Moualla has a particular interest in women with metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovarian syndrome, and women with diabetes. 

She has also made presentations in many parts of the country on women and heart disease, as well as participating in multiple national conferences focused on women.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States.

New OB/GYN office opens in Allegan for Prenatal Care

Katherine Vander Ploeg, MSN, CNM, a Certified Nurse Midwife with Borgess Women’s Health, has opened a new office for prenatal care and birthing services for pregnant area residents. 

She is accepting new patients. 

Known as “Trinie” to her patients, Vander Ploeg has more than 30 years experience in providing OB and newborn delivery care. 

“I am very excited to be bringing my services to Allegan,” says Vander Ploeg.  “Expectant moms shouldn’t have to travel out-of-town to find routine prenatal care – especially during these bad weather months.  I hope this new office can make life just a little easier for them.”

Over the past several months, Borgess Women’s Health has collaborated with Allegan Professional Health Services to establish this new service.

Ms. Vander Ploeg will see patients on Wednesdays of each week.

Ms. Vander Ploeg completed her midwifery education at Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Hyden, Kentucky, and earned a master’s degree in nursing at Case Western Reserve University.  She is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives and is a past recipient of an “Excellence in Nursing Practice Award.” She is passionate about patient education and places an emphasis on holistic care.

Thomas Rohs, MD, named Borgess Trauma Services Medical Director

Kalamazoo, MI – Thomas Rohs, MD, has been named Trauma Services Medical Director for the Borgess Level I Trauma Center. Fresca Swaniker, MD, who has led Borgess Trauma Services for three years, will continue to serve as a trauma surgeon.
 
“Traumatic injuries require an experienced team of professionals,” said Terry Baxter, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Borgess Medical Center. “Borgess Trauma Services includes four skilled surgeons. Both Drs. Rohs and Swaniker offer innovative critical care medicine techniques and inspired care.”
 
Dr. Rohs began his surgical career with Borgess Trauma Services as a staff trauma surgeon in 1998. After serving as Interim Medical Director of Borgess Trauma Services, he became a partner in General and Bariatric Surgery, a division of HealthCare Midwest. In addition to surgery, Dr. Rohs has been active in trauma research studies and the advanced training of both physicians and other health professionals.
 
Dr. Rohs earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed his residency training at the University of Michigan Hospitals. He went on to complete a Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Michigan Hospitals.
 
The Borgess Level I Trauma Center offers not only the hospital resources necessary to treat injured patients, but also the entire spectrum of trauma care, from the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process. Level I Trauma Center designation is based on American College of Surgeons guidelines.
