Healthy Heart

While cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in America, prevention is power. Free Healthy Heart Screenings include blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglycerides, blood sugar and weight. Results are provided onsite.  Free Healthy Heart Screenings are offered:

  • Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 7:00 am – Noon at Borgess at Woodbridge Hills, 7901 Angling Rd., Portage
  • Thursdays, 7:00 am – Noon at Borgess Health & Fitness Center, 3025 Gull Rd., Kalamazoo

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

PAD refers to a narrowing of the arteries that supply blood and nutrients to the legs. Symptoms include leg tightness, fatigue or leg wounds that do not easily heal.  Free, quick and painless PAD screenings are offered:

  • Mondays, Thursdays & Fridays, 8:00 am-Noon at Borgess at Woodbridge Hills

Thyroid

Sensitivity to cold, lack of energy, weight gain, stiff muscles, cramps and/or dry skin and hair could be signs of a possible thyroid disorder. When thyroid hormone levels are low, a person’s body burns energy more slowly, and vital functions like heartbeat and temperature regulation slow down.  A simple finger poke can help you learn if you have a thyroid disorder.  Fast and free thyroid screenings are offered:

  • Thursdays, 8:00 am-Noon at Borgess Health & Fitness Center

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test for Men

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland.  The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood as an indicator of possible prostate cancer or disease.  Detecting prostate cancer early makes it possible to provide treatment when it can be most effective.  Free PSA screenings for men are offered:

  • Tuesday, September 14, 8:00 am-Noon at Borgess-Pipp Hospital, 411 Naomi St.,  Plainwell
  • Wednesday, September 15, 11:00 am-6:00 pm at Borgess Health & Fitness Center
  • Thursday, September 16, 8:00 am-Noon at Borgess at Woodbridge Hills

More information may be obtained by calling the Borgess Screening Coordinator at 269.552.2840.  To schedule a free screening appointment, call 269.226.8135 or 800.828.8135.

Borgess-Pipp Hospital will offer the community two free peripheral arterial disease (PAD) screenings on Tuesday, April 27 and Wednesday, April 28, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the community room.

“Every year, vascular conditions like peripheral arterial disease claim thousands of lives,” said Kathy Russell, cardiovascular services manager, Borgess-Pipp Hospital. “Through this free event, our goal is to educate people about their risks and help detect the possibility of a condition in advance of it becoming a larger health issue.”

Affecting millions of older Americans, PAD refers to the narrowing of arteries that supply blood and nutrients to the legs. Often the result of cholesterol buildup, PAD causes difficulty walking and may even lead to stroke or heart attack. Common symptoms include leg pain, cramping, tightness or fatigue, impotence, and leg wounds or ulcers that do not heal easily.

The Risk Factors

Factors that increase one’s chances of developing PAD include advancing age, gender (men are at greater risk until age 70), cigarette smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, lack of exercise and uncontrolled stress. According to the American Vascular Association, despite its potential for complications like stroke, loss of limbs or death, vascular diseases like PAD tend to be under diagnosed in the U.S. However, if detected early, effective treatment options are available for many vascular conditions.

Fast, Painless and Free

PAD screening involves using blood pressure cuffs and a Doppler ultrasound probe. It is a fast and painless test. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. To register, call 269.226.8135 or 800.828.8135.

Borgess-Pipp Hospital delivers comprehensive health services to Plainwell, Otsego and surrounding communities, from laboratory and diagnostic imaging to long-term acute and “no wait” emergency care. A member of Borgess Health, the largest health care provider in southwest Michigan, Borgess-Pipp Hospital also has the resources to offer specialized, nationally recognized medicine.

Encouraging testing for colon cancer awareness month

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) – March is colon cancer awareness month, and for those over the age of 50, it’s time to get screened.

Dr. Brij Dewan is on a mission. He wants West Michigan to top the nation in colorectal screening rates.

“We have not reached the goal that we would like to receive,” said Dr. Dewan.

That goal is why Borgess is offering free screening kits for the third year in a row. The kit is simple, twist open the tube, insert a stool sample and return it in an envelope. A simple stool blood test, close to 800 people participated in 2009.

“We have found some cases of colon cancer among those patients,” said Dr. Dewan. “I think those people definitely had a benefit from this test.”

For those over the age of 50, Dr. Dewan recommends a second test, a colonoscopy, a visual inspection of the inside of the colon. Such a test can help doctors identify and remove polyps before they become cancerous.

“If there’s any premalignant lichens we can find those, we can remove those,” said Dr. Dewan. “If we find a cancer, we can biopsy it, we can sample it and take appropriate measures.”

The national colorectal screening rate is only 40 percent, nowhere near the goal of 80 percent.
