KALAMAZOO, MI – Living with diabetes and building a culture of health is the focus of a free wellness conference to be held at Borgess Medical Center.

The conference takes place from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2 inside the Lawrence Education Center.  It features a keynote address from Chris Lampen-Crowell, co-founder of Gazelle Sports in Kalamazoo.  Chris will share his vision, “Kalamazoo: Keep Moving Building a Culture of Health.”  His address focuses on how Kalamazoo can transform to become the healthiest community in the nation.

The diabetes wellness conference features free health information exhibits, along with a workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. led by Michael Valitutto, DO, medical director, Borgess Diabetes Center.  Dr. Valitutto’s workshop is titled, “Lab Language: Understanding Vitamin D, Thyroid, Testosterone and Other Lesser Known Lab Tests.”

“Diabetes affects more than 66,000 people in southwest Michigan alone,” said Dr. Valitutto.  “That may seem like a huge number, but the good news is that people can learn to better manage the disease, feel their very best and live a longer, healthier life.  Our goal for the conference is to provide people with the tools and knowledge to make that happen for them.”

Certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health and the American Diabetes Association, the Borgess Diabetes Center features classroom instruction, individual education and an insulin pump therapy program.  Specially trained in diabetes management, the Center’s nurses and dietitians provide personalized, highly skilled care to each and every patient they serve.  Borgess has the first clinical practices and the only primary care practitioners in Kalamazoo County to receive recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for providing the highest level of diabetes care.

KALAMAZOO, MI – Thirty-seven Borgess physicians have received recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for providing the highest level of diabetes care.

“Diabetes affects more than 66,000* people in southwest Michigan alone and increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, and other serious health conditions and complications,” said Dr Anthony Oliva, Chief Medical Officer for Borgess Health. “Borgess has raised the bar in clinical quality by having the first practices and only primary care practitioners in Kalamazoo County to achieve the NCQA recognition. This reinforces that our providers are measurably among the best in the nation in caring for patients with diabetes.”

The NCQA developed a voluntary program called Diabetes Recognition Program (DRP) that gives caregivers tools to support the delivery and recognition of consistent high-quality care. The program identifies providers who use evidence-based measures and offers excellent care to their patients with diabetes.

The DRP covers areas such as:

  • HbA1c control

KALAMAZOO MI– Dennis Channells found out he had diabetes during a most difficult moment: While having a heart attack.

Channells didn’t have health insurance and he can thank, in part, Touchdown for Diabetes, (an annual fundraising event established by Cole Community Solutions, Inc., a non-profit organization established by Cole Automotive Group) for the lifesaving heart and diabetes care he received at Borgess Medical Center.

Cole Community Solutions, Inc., recently presented a $60,000 check to the Borgess Foundation. Cole Community Solutions, Inc. has donated $175,000 to the Borgess Diabetes Center in support of uninsured and underinsured diabetes patients since 2009.

The 57-year-old rural area resident was in an ambulance on his way to Borgess Medical Center in the spring of 2010 when the paramedics discovered that he had a blood sugar level of 350, well above safe levels.

Bypass surgery then care from Borgess Diabetes Center professionals

Channells underwent emergency heart bypass surgery at the Borgess Heart Institute and soon thereafter was referred to the Borgess Diabetes Center where he learned how to keep his serious case of diabetes under control. “Borgess saved my life twice,” said Channells, a retired welder.

“When I went to the Diabetes Center and saw Dr. Michael Valitutto, (Medical Director, Borgess Diabetes Center) they immediately started to take care of me,” Channells said. “I didn’t have any health insurance then and they got me the insulin and the medicines and the needles–everything I needed. The people there were wonderful. I owe a lot to Borgess–I owe my life to Borgess–for how well they took care of me.”

“Often the underinsured don’t know they have diabetes until they have a complication, like a heart attack,” said Dr. Valitutto. “About 22,000 Kalamazoo area residents have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and the disease is most prevalent among those with the lowest education and those with the lowest income levels.

“Diabetes can lead to heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and other complications,” said Dr. Valitutto. “Without appropriate care, including medications, the resulting cost of diabetes can be costly emergency intervention and too often devastating consequences for the patient.” Cole Community Solutions, Inc. organizes Touchdown for Diabetes each year. The event includes a silent auction and a drawing for $20,000.

For twelve years, Cole Buick-GMC-Cadillac (formerly Cole-Gilmore Cadillac-Pontiac-GMC Truck-Nissan) co-sponsored a fundraiser with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to raise money for diabetes across the country. In 2009, with the economic downturn, they felt it more important to focus on the needs of the local community, resulting in a new affiliation with the Borgess Diabetes Center. All Touchdown for Diabetes contributions now stay within Kalamazoo County.

Pfizer, Inc. has awarded the Borgess Foundation a $15,000 grant for use in supporting lab services at the Borgess Diabetes Center for uninsured persons with diabetes living in the greater Kalamazoo area.

Patients receive physician care, as well as necessary lab testing, assistance in obtaining glucose monitoring supplies and determination of eligibility for pharmaceutical indigent care programs. A case manager provides assessment for further medical needs and potential assistance from other community programs.

This education and assistance helps reduce use of local emergency rooms for routine diabetes treatment that should be provided in a physician-based setting.

Kalamazoo County hosts one of Pfizer’s largest sites in the world, including manufacturing and veterinary medicine operations. Diabetes is a key area of human-health research and development for Pfizer. The company’s R&D pipeline includes a number of compounds being studied to treat this serious disease and related conditions. For more on Pfizer research, visit www.pfizer.com/pipeline.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)  and American Diabetes Association (ADA) have recognized 24 Borgess doctors, including the Borgess Diabetes Center Medical Director Michael Valitutto, DO, for providing the highest level of care.

Certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health and the American Diabetes Association, the Borgess Diabetes Center provides classroom instruction, individual education and an insulin pump therapy program. Specially trained in diabetes management, Borgess Diabetes Center nurses and dietitians provide personalized, highly skilled care to each patient.
